Since 2023, we've had an amazing journey building one of the best open source data pipelines for monitoring the open source universe. Our pipeline powered everything from Optimism Retro Funding (which distributed over 70M+ OP to open source projects) to strategic dashboards for various software ecosystems (like the Ethereum Foundation). We have learned a lot and we have ambitious plans to apply these learnings to transform how open data will work in the future!
Today (March 4, 2026) marks an important transition for our project. We are moving the dbt/sqlmesh pipeline that powered the OSO data platform up until today to a new home, archiving it, and breaking ground on a new platform.
There are two motivating drivers behind this transition:
- AI is fundamentally transforming the jobs of data teams. Agents are now able to go beyond just drafting SQL queries, to building entire pipelines and insights engines end-to-end.
- Open source licenses as they currently exist fail to address the financial realities of sustaining open source. This is exacerbated in the data economy, where the real costs of just running a data pipeline can easily exceed the cost of a salary.
But we have a plan! We just need some time.
- oso.xyz is evolving to become a general purpose data platform and agentic data team. You can do everything you could do previously and much more through the platform.
- We have saved a public archive the dbt/sqlmesh pipelines, so anyone can learn from our open source models.
- We are working with our current partners to evolve this pipeline using agents on top of the OSO platform to accelerate new development and lower the cost of maintenance.
We believe we need to build an open economy, built on public goods, that out-innovates the closed proprietary counterparts of today. We believe that all value creators, especially digital public infrastructure like open source, should enjoy in the prosperity they helped create. Meanwhile, we are building what we think the open data economy will look like, looking well past the single data pipeline we built previously. We believe agents and humans together will finally democratize access to rich data markets, making more insights accessible to more people.
