# Sponsorship

Open Science Labs (OSL) helps people learn, build, and contribute to impactful
open-source projects for research, education, and social good.

We are building a welcoming community where contributors, mentors, researchers,
students, educators, maintainers, and partner organizations can collaborate
around open science and open-source software.

Sponsorship helps us sustain this work.

By becoming a sponsor, your organization supports mentorship, internships,
open-source project development, community events, documentation,
infrastructure, learning resources, and pathways for new contributors to gain
practical experience in real projects.

## Why Sponsor OSL?

Sponsoring Open Science Labs is a way to support open science, open-source
sustainability, research education, and global collaboration.

Your sponsorship can help us:

- support contributors, mentors, and maintainers;
- prepare and run open-source mentorship programs;
- improve documentation and onboarding for projects;
- organize workshops, study groups, office hours, demo days, and community
events;
- support project incubation and affiliation;
- strengthen open-source tools used in research, education, data science, and
scientific computing;
- maintain community infrastructure, websites, communication channels, and
learning materials;
- create transparent annual reports for sponsors and the community.

Sponsorship is also a meaningful way for organizations to show commitment to
open source, education, research, social impact, and talent development.

## Community and Track Record

OSL has a growing international community and a track record of mentoring
contributors through open-source programs.

Highlights:

- OSL participates in Google Summer of Code and has been involved for four
consecutive years.
- 2026 is OSL’s second year as a Google Summer of Code mentoring organization.
- A total of 15 projects have participated through OSL-related Google Summer of
Code activities.
- The OSL Discord community has approximately 1,300 members as of June 2026.
- OSL supports internships, project affiliation, incubation, study groups, and
contributor pathways.
- OSL uses Open Source Collective / Open Collective as its fiscal host for
open-source initiatives.

## What Sponsorship Supports

Sponsor contributions may support one or more of the following areas:

- mentorship and contributor onboarding;
- internships, fellowships, and contributor support;
- open-source project maintenance;
- documentation, tutorials, and learning materials;
- workshops, study groups, talks, and demo days;
- community management and communication;
- website, hosting, tooling, and infrastructure;
- event participation and outreach;
- stickers, T-shirts, flyers, banners, and event materials when funding allows;
- annual reporting and sponsor stewardship.

Some activities depend on the total amount raised, operational capacity, mentor
availability, and logistics. We do not guarantee that every activity listed
above will happen every year. We report transparently on what was delivered,
what was postponed, and what additional support is needed.

## Sponsorship Levels

The following annual levels are suggested starting points. We are happy to
discuss custom sponsorships, in-kind support, event sponsorships, fellowships,
or multi-year partnerships.

| Level | Suggested Annual Contribution | Best For |
| -------- | ----------------------------: | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Bronze | USD 500–1,999 | Individuals, small companies, startups, and community supporters |
| Silver | USD 2,000–4,999 | Companies, research groups, labs, and university departments |
| Gold | USD 5,000–9,999 | Established companies, foundations, and research institutes |
| Platinum | USD 10,000+ | Strategic partners and major institutional sponsors |

## Sponsor Recognition

Sponsors may receive recognition through:

- listing on this page, organized by year and sponsorship level;
- logo or name with a link to the sponsor website;
- inclusion in the annual sponsor report;
- acknowledgment in selected community updates;
- recognition in selected event pages, slides, or recap posts;
- sponsor announcements, when appropriate;
- visibility in selected materials such as slide decks, flyers, stickers,
T-shirts, banners, and event materials when those activities are funded and
relevant.

Sponsor recognition does not imply endorsement of products or services unless
explicitly agreed in writing.

## Discord Sponsor News

OSL may maintain a curated Discord channel for sponsor news and
sponsor-supported opportunities:

```text
#sponsors-news
```

This channel may be used for community-relevant messages such as:

- jobs and internships;
- fellowships and scholarships;
- open-source calls;
- research opportunities;
- workshops and webinars;
- community events;
- data or code challenges;
- free educational resources.

Suggested message frequency:

| Level | Suggested Frequency |
| -------- | ------------------------------------ |
| Bronze | Up to 2 approved messages per year |
| Silver | Up to 1 approved message per quarter |
| Gold | Up to 1 approved message per month |
| Platinum | Up to 2 approved messages per month |

All messages are subject to OSL review. The channel should provide value to the

promotions.

## Notes for Sponsors

- Sponsorship does not grant control over OSL governance, project decisions,
technical roadmaps, community moderation, or research outcomes.
- OSL may decline sponsorships that are not aligned with its mission, values, or
community standards.
- The fiscal, legal, and accounting treatment of sponsorships depends on the
sponsor, jurisdiction, payment route, and applicable rules.
- Sponsors should consult their own legal, accounting, and tax advisors when
needed.
