Project Plan: Desktop Application Architecture with Frontend + Local Python Backend

I. Project Goals

Refactor the current application into a modern desktop application:

  • Provide an excellent frontend user experience
  • Support local execution (no server deployment required)
  • Use Python as the backend logic layer
  • Ultimately package it as a cross-platform desktop application

II. Overall Architecture Design

Frontend UI (Next.js)

Local Python Backend (FastAPI)

Local Files / Data Processing / AI Capabilities

III. Technology Stack Selection

1️⃣ Frontend

  • Next.js

  • Responsible for:

    • Page structure
    • User interaction experience
    • State management
  • Can integrate:

    • Monaco Editor (for text / Markdown / code editing)

2️⃣ Backend (Local)

  • FastAPI

  • Responsible for:

    • File read/write operations
    • Data processing
    • AI / NLP / business logic
    • Local API services

3️⃣ Desktop Packaging (Advanced)

  • Tauri

Used for:

  • Packaging the Next.js frontend into a desktop application
  • Running alongside the local Python backend
  • Providing a lightweight cross-platform app (Windows / macOS / Linux)

IV. Core Feature Module Design

1️⃣ Frontend Module (Next.js)

  • Page system (UI)
  • Editor module (Monaco)
  • File management interface
  • API communication layer (interaction with Python backend)

2️⃣ Python Backend Module

  • Local API service (FastAPI)
  • File system management
  • Data processing logic
  • Extensible AI capabilities (e.g., summarization, analysis)

3️⃣ Editor Module

  • Based on Monaco Editor

  • Supports:

    • Markdown
    • Syntax highlighting
    • Autocompletion
    • Multi-language support

V. Runtime Modes

Development Mode

Next.js (frontend dev server)

FastAPI (local Python service)

Production Mode (Desktop App)

Tauri container

VI. Packaging Strategy (Advanced Goal)

Using Tauri to achieve:

  • Lightweight desktop application packaging
  • No user environment configuration required
  • One-click launch (double-click to run)
  • Offline support
