Google Pixel Tablet freezing with stylus and touch #2122

Have you checked if an issue already exists for this bug?

  • Nobody else has reported this bug before

Have you tried restarting your device?

  • I have tried restarting my device and that did not help

What happened that you did not expect?

My tablet will freeze up and stop responding to touch or stylus input for a while if I am touching the screen with my finger, and then I tap (or otherwise attempt to interact with) the screen with the stylus. This occurs with both styluses I have tested, the Penoval usi2.0 stylus pen and the eiP usi 2.0 pro stylus pen.

An additional behavior that this issue exhibits is the inability to use the volume keys. When pressed, the UI elements that would usually show volume adjustments do not show up. Pressing the power button to lock the device only turns off the screen, and pressing it again shows me whatever I was last looking at (the device isn't visibly locking while it's in this frozen state). I can double-press the power button to open the camera, but I still can't interact with the tablet until it unfreezes. The camera preview does show what the camera sees, so it's probably not a full system freeze.

Disabling the Key Mapper accessibility service seems to resolve this issue. Enabling it brings it back.

Here are my keymaps:

I've been having this issue for either slightly more than or slightly less than a month. It took me a while to narrow it down to this.

What did you expect to happen?

When I have my finger on the screen and then touch my stylus to the screen, it should stop responding to my finger and respond only to the stylus until the stylus is sufficiently distanced from the screen.

What would the developer need to do to reproduce the bug?

I believe this should do it (I have not tested anything before step 4, it is purely my best guess):

  1. Set up the app.
  2. Change to Expert mode (I do not recall doing this, but it is the currently selected mode, and I haven't actually interacted with the app in over a year (before yesterday))
  3. Create one (or more) remappings for the volume keys
    • In my case, the volume keys are remapped to swap which is down and which is up. May be important, not sure.
  4. Ensure the accessibility service is running
  5. While touching the screen with a capacitive item (finger, "dumb" stylus, etc.), bring the "smart" (in my case, USI 2.0) stylus up to the screen and contact the screen with it.
  6. Device should stop properly responding to input for some time.
