Axis fails to open with a new missing runtime dependency libfmt-dev

In the last week, Axis has gained a new run time dependency libfmt-dev
Becasue of this, Axis errors and fails to open,

It appears this has not been added to the Debian control files or it would have been installed when following the Building LinuxCNC instructions.

An inexperienced user will come to grief resolving this issue. It would be good if it could be fixed.

The libfmt-dev package has been added in #3815 two months ago. That should pull in the proper dependency definition when the .deb is build. I guess that works or there would have been more complaints?

So, what happened?

BTW, I don't think you should add a blind libfmt dependency because they are called differently on different distro versions and there may be multiple versions. The .deb build should take care of this properly.

Strange, It built successfully on 27 March and probably a few times after that, I have it scripted for a Debian Live build so it clones afresh on every build.

I will be working on buiding 2.10 Debs in the next few days so will report back.

That was not experience. I built a Run in Place version in a scripted Debian Live environment and after the ISO was installed in a QEMU virtual environment, axis would not load until libfmt-dev was installed. The same ISO worked fine before this issue was identified.

The runtime dependency is libfmtX, which should be installed as dependency if you install the linuxcnc debian package. OTOH it is surprising that you can build a RIP version without having libfmt-dev installed.

libfmt-dev depends on and therefore will install libfmtX, so installing "libfmt-dev" is sufficient but not necessary ;-)

There is no package in the Debian repository for libfmtX
If that's what you have for the Deb build, perhaps the current dependency is incorrect?

Sorry for being a bit imprecise, the X in libfmt stands for ABI version number (like with other debian library packages), so on trixie there is libfmt10, on bookworm libfmt9, on bullseye libfmt7 and so on.

Not sure. I just added the package to my list of required packages that get installed. Others may not be so lucky.

@rodw-au can you check after building your .deb if debian/linuxcnc-uspace.substvars mentions libfmt?

edit: on my kde neon dev machine (ubuntu 24.04 variant) it generates proper dependency to libfmt9 (>= 9.1.0+ds1) in control file in .deb package.

Hmm, on today's master code base following the instructions in 4.2 of Building Linuxcnc docs

I get errors when its worked everytime before.
There is also a typo on that page in $ ./debian/configure which should say ../debian/configure but I am past that here

I do this. You will see in my last post this line now errors. Why I don't know

you need to run these commands from ~/devt/linuxcnc (not from src).
